Ålesund was according to legend the home of the viking Rollo, founder of the dynasty of the dukes of Normandy and is a fishing town built on three islands connected by bridges. But its most famous for its unusually consistent architecture, most of the buildings having been built between 1904 and 1907 after a huge fire destroyed most of the city. Because of this the historic city center is virtually entirely composed of buildings in the Jugend (Art Nouveau) style.
I celebrated May 17th (Norway’s National Day) in Ålesund, my father’s (and mye bunads) hometown. it was so much fun.
